About The Artwork

My art is characterized by a fusion of conventional and abstract forms. This merger is as a result of thoughts that capture an outpour of social commentaries and narratives from everyday lives, enveloped into ideas and executed into a conceptual and media experimentation The strong fascination with facial expressions, the hidden codes and signals sent by the human eyes, is pivotal to my ability to explore and document human and their experiences in my immediate environment. It is also a proof of my inspiration. My ideas are registered using acrylic, charcoal and oil colors experimentally with a fusion of abstraction and portraiture to bridge the gap between my concepts, with coded motifs mostly on the background. My creative thirst, gives an experimental approach in my works, by breaking down the realistic facial expressions, into perceived weaknesses, strength, joy as much as I can, feel into absolute interpretations of individuals living in a wounded space. The physicality of my works carry the empathy for my homeland (Nigeria).

Born in Badagry, the coastal town of Lagos in 1991, Samuel Vittu believes that the face is laced with diverse stories. His work constantly interrogate the exterior of the face as an entry point into larger issues in the society with the use of acrylic, oil and charcoal. He fuses abstraction, Anthropomorphism and portraiture, he employs bulgy eyes as windows and zoom lens into the happenings, experiences, thoughts, and crisis that goes on in the mind of his subjects. As a practicing artist, Samuel works chiefly across painting and drawing. Working with charcoal, oil, acrylic and canvas has been his chosen media to register and visualize his inspiration, ideas and imaginations. The resulting artworks from his usually mixed-media experimentations are figuratively conceptual, suggestive, evocative and formalistic. He has participated in exhibitions within the country over time. Samuel lives and work in Lagos, Nigeria.
