I enjoyed painting the first version of Late Summer Skaters in September, when I used oils and think I captured some of the warm hazy glow. But I wanted to experiment with a looser style and the feeling of layered light, I thought of the big brush and watery layers I had been using for my acrylic seascapes... so I painted Skaters 2 in October, and liked the result. I wanted to try another version to tidy up rough edges and explore subtle tints and hues ... here it is , version 3. This painting captures the feeling of the seafront promenade in my home town at the end of a hot sunny day toward the end of summer. The shared feeling of warmth and stillness, that we know must end sometime soon. But for now ... I was out skating on Hove Promenade - in Brighton and Hove, England - on 26 August 2022, a balmy summer day, and I took some photos into sun. I was looking for new theme for my painting, after series of chalk cliffs paintings. These new photos gave me a chance to explore interactions between people - the social, yet separate interactions of people who come out on the promenade to walk, to jog, to skate - to be with other people. The quality of light, the warm harmonies of orange and red and yellow, these I worked on in photoshop before making a print, which I further interpreted when drawing onto a board primed with yellow ochre and chrome yellow.

I use creativity to explore my identity, to interpret and meditate on mind, body, nature, the world. I paint and draw and write and sometimes combine all three in digital mediums. Some of my recent work reflects the social and political reality. I've been drawing from life in pastels, pencils and charcoal since my teens. I've been painting since 2007, and have been involved in artists groups in Manchester, Zimbabwe and Brighton. I'm a Dad and I live in Brighton. My parents were both artists.
