About The Artwork
Having grown up in rural North Yorkshire and then studied in London, I have a strong appreciation of nature and for the beautifully ugly details of cities and industry. The battle for control between natural and urban landscapes is a recurring focus of my work and inspires me both aesthetically and conceptually. My work is inspired by neglected walls where dirt overlaps in layers and plants live in the smallest of cracks. Lately, I have been combining harsh hand-made marks with more uncontrolled textures to explore this curiosity. In my work I want to celebrate the free, rebellious side to nature: the moss or ferns growing in a gutter that one day seem to be flourishing and then dying the next, the little things that change, the fragility of life in urban spaces.

He describes his artistic expression as being rooted in the contrasts of colour, mark-making, and texture, as well as controlled randomness. Specifically, Glendenning endeavours to create a "sense of place" within each of his compositions, often focusing on the relationship between urban and natural environments.
