About The Artwork

Monhegan’s “lookout meadow” - the great meadow atop Lighthouse Hill -view over whole village, and harbor, and Coast Guard island. (Unfortunately always mowed - no cattle, like in the old days, that munched all the glorious waving grasses of yore.) The building at right is the Lighthouse (now a museum). The angled rooftop below was where the Marders (from Urbana Champaign) summered every year. View to the north - the passage taken by the mail boat, steering between those islands to reach Port Clyde (hidden not only by islands, but too far away anyway to even be seen). The only mainland ever seen was restricted to those few extreme clear days, when the shores around Pemaquid, lying to the west, came into view. The world of Monhegan otherwise was a world out at sea. Totally isolated by the ocean.

I work on location, but I get catapulted to distances way beyond. In order not to get stuck, I consciously dare my brush, take wild chances, only to find that I am still in the grip of some unseen guide. A structure forever keeps dominance, slapping at me as I try to "ride the wind". One's desire to take responsibility is what gets it past the start, and and innate integrity tells one when to let go. It's an urge to follow; it has nothing to do with choice. One is chosen and what is inevitable is that there is birth.
