There's a little park beside the main entrance to Massey University, Bledisloe Park. It's used as a parking area by indigent students, and a source of free cars by indigent car-thieves. Turitea Stream runs beside it, and there are a couple of walking tracks through it, some leading to the university, and some just leading through gorgeous bush. This is one of the trees along one of the tracks. The tree, produced with a stylised technique - dragging liquid paint with a credit card - looks highly realistic, while the leafage in the background, painted more realistically - by repeated phases of masking out individual leaf shapes, and applying a green wash to suggest the colour behind them - looks more stylised. The main tree is close in appearance to the real one; the others I invented to balance the composition. People sometimes ask me, in something of an accusatory tone, whether I base my pictures on photographs, or even observe, disdainfully, that they look just like a photograph. Personally, I never think my paintings look like photos, but if a painting looks to you as though it was copied verbatim from a photo, you can be pretty sure it wasn't. At least one of my Lockdown paintings was painted without any photographic reference at all. Clearly not the magpie, which required close observation of a photo for its main subject (although the background was invented), or today's painting (ditto), but it could be any of the others. Which do you think it was?
