About The Artwork

Matangi is inspired by objects around them, images from the internet and nostalgic rituals they grew up with as well as their own. They see their paintings as a record of objects around them, and the internet in the 21st century. [These are painted on canvas boards and need to be framed + need hanging hardware]

Matangi Mahakali (she/they) is a queer, non-binary, disabled, Indian transdisciplinary artist, and self taught painter, tattoo artist and entrepreneur. Their work is a collaboration between their soul, body and mind. They channel their soul's speech into bodily movement and flow which their mind then brings together and posthumously makes sense of. Their soul seems to want to show the contradiction and inexistence of dualities, space and time, chaos and order, light and dark, dissecting, invalidating and creating them through explorations and iterations. They want to incite feeling, invite emotions, and create confusion. They live in a constantly opposing reality, in between duality, existing but not existing, in a place unfathomable, ineffable, untold. This series came together as a way to express their constantly dissociating mind and scattered thoughts. Matangi is inspired by objects around them, images from the internet and rituals they grew up with as well as their own. Their work and thought process is constantly contradicting itself, creating and destroying dualities. They see their paintings as a record of objects around them, and the internet in the 21st century.
