I am working in a painting group on the Big Island of Hawai'i, led by the lively colorist, Peggy Stanton. I was looking for a subject for smaller canvases to work on up at the lovely Volcano Art Center where our group meets. We had taken our grandson to Lilioukalani Park so he could spin around on his bicycle there. The trees were so striking and charming that I shot a series of photos, which I then used as a source for this, and other, paintings. Interestingly, in 1986 at the university of California at Berkeley, I had made a 16 foot wide painting on two canvases, which was a completely imaginary tree. That imagined tree of long ago is strikingly similar to the one above.

I have lived and worked on the Big Island of Hawai'i since 2009. The inspiration provided by that change of location, from the San Francisco Bay Area to Keaʻau, Hawaii, is clearly evident in the work. My Berkeley roots have continued to guide my practice, even as my work now springs from Hawaii.
