About The Artwork

In my recent paintings I am exploring line and colored shapes. Whereas in my previous paintings I experimented with line and shapes. In this case the lines create the major colored shapes. I have been painting my abstracts in the spirit of art informel. Art informel is a concept developed in Europe at the same time as abstract expressionism described the paintings of the New York school in the 50's. Art informel describes the method of abstract painting that is not preconceived. It develop spontaneously and often includes elements of chance and random shapes and line.

Ethel Vrana is an abstract painter from Ithaca, New York, whose work has been exhibited regionally in both solo and group shows. Her work is owned by collectors in the United States, England, Austria, Sweden, Australia and Japan. Vrana has been painting since she was 14, when she received her first professional set of oil paints for her birthday. Her interest in painting led to a BS degree in Fine Art and Philosophy from the University of Rochester. Early in her career, Ethel painted impressionistic landscapes which later evolved into abstract expressionism. Currently her abstract paintings are inspired by her interest in the spacial relationships of forms. Of her current paintings she says, "I am intrigued by the endless variety of compositional structures and evocative arrangements of shapes, lines, and colors.""
