London Town Print

A busy street near Tottenham Court Road, London. A crowd, loosely drawn, pushes forward towards the taxis parked on the left. A red double-decker pulls in to a stop, awaited by a lone figure in red. This work captures a single moment in a busy London day. I have deliberately used a style that straddles the borders between impressionism and expressionism. The figures are loosely drawn, but their expressive movements capture the bustle inherent in the moving crowd. I have used the colour red to set up a dancing pattern between the bus, the central figures in the crowd, and the high, over-seeing windows. The semi-complementary, blue, is used for floor and sky, with firm blue- and brown-blacks providing the frame provided by the tree, lampstand and traffic light. I have tried to capture a second's dance of light and colour before it flees into an ever emptying and changing space that is London's rush hour.
