This title comes from the idea of looking or examining things on the ground, and also the idea of looking at things in general more closely. A weathered stone, for example, isn't pretty in itself, like flowers or butterflies are, but it has a lot of details that are worth examining, such as tiny bits of crystal, veins of different kinds of rock, and so on. The more you look at objects like this in nature, the more you find. The third photo I loaded here (which isn't specific to this image per se) shows the kinds of things that I collect on walks in the countryside and use to produce these pictures. I really enjoy closely examining things that I find outside on walks and trying to mimic their appearance and texture. I started this composition by drawing in the basic outlines of things like the stones in very light charcoal lines, partially rubbing these out before I began to paint in acrylic. Some natural objects are shown in more detail than others, and some parts of the composition - such as the tangled vegetation that links the left and right sides - are almost abstract. By putting the objects in the painting against a white background, the overall composition becomes more abstract as well. I painted the canvas on all four sides, and protected it with two layers of acrylic spray varnish. It is sent in a tube.

Turkey
I am an artist and writer with paintings in private and corporate collections in Turkey, the UK, the United States, Canada and Australia. I live in Adana, Turkey. I am a member of both local and national jury-selected artists' associations and often participate in Turkish-government sponsored exhibitions in other countries. I paint in both figurative and abstract styles, but most recently my interest has been in capturing the kind of details in nature that you would usually pass by without a second glance: things like weathered rocks, broken branches and dying leaves. The idea behind this 'Vanitas' series is perhaps that the value and beauty of the ordinary things in nature lies in their impermanence. Many of my works are built up of multiple layers over a long period of time − using a variety of techniques and tools. Layers of paint are poured, glazed, scratched, and rubbed away until the desired effect is achieved. Each exhibition I take part in brings me into contact with many artists and art lovers, whose feedback and reactions to my work I find invaluable. I continue to develop new techniques and explore new approaches in order to develop my personal response to the world around me.
