About The Artwork

This painting was part of a solo exhibit I had in September 2017, titled "Luchadores." This Spanish word means "Fighters" or "Wrestlers." Luchadores was a painting exhibition about the struggles we all face in modern life which paradoxically are exactly what give our life its wonderful complexity and beauty. There are those that say that life itself is a struggle. If so, we can either accept it or, ironically enough, struggle with this idea. And if we accept it as natural, then we can learn to enjoy this struggle. All artists reflect their surroundings, and as I spent much of my life in Mexico, surrounded by lucha libre and heroic, revolutionary murals, it is natural that that should be the way I give form to my own reflections and feelings about struggles. We are all strugglers; we are fighters; sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. And life goes on until it doesn’t. I used only acrylic paint on all of the 5 canvases which made up the small solo exhibit. I was digging into my roots as a street artist, and attempting to imitate the textures of acrylic paint on walls. I wanted to make these paintings as immediate and catching as a street artwork, in which the message needs to be as clearly stated as possible. In this painting's case, the struggle of loves, or in Spanish, "Lucha de Amores." It is my hope that these paintings will cause viewers to reflect on the paradoxes of struggle. What would we do without these? Wouldn’t you agree that these may even give our life meaning? What about the struggle to make art and to follow one’s calling? Here’s to all of us, we are all luchadores. Salud! Cheers!

Luna grew up in rural Mexico, the son of a Mexican quantum chaos physicist and an American mother who taught, wrote, edited and translated. Part of his youth was spent in the United States. In California, he studied Cultural Anthropology and Art, specializing in printmaking at UCSC. As an adult, he has lived in Germany, Hungary, and Thailand. Each place has influenced his art and provided inspiration on his journey to find peace in paradox. His work has been sold worldwide in such countries as Thailand, Mexico, USA, Malaysia and Hungary. ARTIST STATEMENT My drawings are abstracted from various aspects of nature. Each of them is a prospective sculptural essence. They are conceived from enhancements, maturities, multiplications and intensification of forms. My main subjects are people because they are a world, a landscape, and an animal all bundled into one. My work is strongly inspired by the Mexican muralists whose murals I grew up seeing as well as by the delicate line-work which characterises Thai and much of Asian art. The American expressionists’ use of color and bold strokes are how my American side shows itself. Interested in becoming a Patron? Click here: https://www.patreon.com/nicolaslunaartist
