Mixed Media: Acrylic, graphite, linen, gunpowder and blood on canvas ABOUT THE WORK The artist's friend Ellen is battling stage four cancer and this work was created to allay her medical costs. The entire sale of the work will be used for her benefit. This is a very personal work. The work was created by igniting various layers and configurations of selected gunpowders on the surface of a heavily gessoed and textured canvas and done so in multiple stages. Gunpowder employed in this context can be guided but it cannot be controlled. It ultimately speaks with its own voice and what remains after the smoke clears is the substance's own distinct and volatile signature. The artist simply decides when the gunpowder has "fully spoken." The prose was then inscribed in an intentional and delicate contrast. Using graphite and acrylic, the words are rendered in a palimpsest allowing them to almost fade entirely yet be able to be discerned with close inspection. It's a work that then requires an intimacy with its audience. The words and phrases that emerge speak of a shared journey of the artist, his friend and a larger community of which they are a part of. The result is a counterpoint in extremes, bother visually and poetically, yet ones intrinsically bound: The emotional and physical intensity of his friend's fight against an unjust disease and the unyielding love of friends surrounding and supporting her. Life is both dangerous and fragile. It is the artist's largest gunpowder work to date.
