Painting: Ink, Dye Transfer, Wax on Soft (Yarn, Cotton, Fabric).
Marching trees was one of my first batiks, created in the early 1970's. I was inspired by Jack Lenor Larsen and the weavers and textile designers of that era. The piece is also informed by many road trips taken through my life, driving up through Washington, Oregon, Canada and the Pacific Northwest region one moves through extraordinary forested landscapes. It was while driving through these forests and exploring the shifting perspectives as one moves through the landscape that I was inspired to attempt to create several perspectives within a single composition.
This piece was created when I was still dipping the fabric in a bath tub to color it, before I developed my current process of painting the works to introduce colors.
This composition features lovely earthy tones, sweeping runs of trees in green, black, amber and brown march across the plane creating a patchwork of forest.
