About The Artwork

Marie-Rose was my grand-mother, and this painting is an homage to her. I painted my grand-mother in sepia colours, just like in her old pictures. I wanted her to contrast with her surrounding, a memory that lingers on. She have her usual smile, a tender smile that is best red through her eyes and not her lips. She is surrounded by elements of her home: The traditional tiles and the hanging jasmine on herr balcony, the arch design (the shadow on the tiles) of the facade, the design of the balustrade. The style is vintage as a nod to old Beirut, the house I grew up in and the women that filled us with love. As a background music, I wrote a part of a poem that was written to my grand-mother on one of her birthdays. The words say: "That is how homes arise women whose lights have erased darkness". Just like I remember my grand-mother, a light that brings comfort and joy to those who knew her.
