About The Artwork

Matsya, Manu & The Manavas Manu is the name accorded to the progenitor of humanity, who appears in the world at the start of a new kalpa, after universal destruction. According to the Puranas, 14 Manus appear in each kalpa. The period of each Manu is called Manvantara. The current world is that of Vaivasvata, the seventh Manu of Swetha varaha kalpa. Vaivasvata, also known as Sraddhadeva or Satyavrat, was the king of Jambudweepam(original name of Indian Subcontinent) with his seat of power somewhere near present Kerala before the great flood(during the end of ice age). During his morning abolitions in the water, Manu all the small fish in his hands. The fish warned him that a massive, all-consuming flood will come in a certain year and instructs Manu to build a huge carrier. It asked him to save its life and promised in return to save him and his people from impending calamity. Manu cared for the fish that gradually grows in size. Then when the flood came the fish told Manu to tie a rope of his submarine to his horn and the fish takes Manu to the Himalayan mountains for safety. The mountain where the fish took Manu was called Manoravsarpanam/Mansarovar or Manu’s descent. Descending from their refuge in the Himalayas, Manu led his people to the banks of the River Saraswathi beneath the himalayan foot hills and established a great dynasty that produced both kings and sages who created sustained Vedic civilisation. Thus saved and ruled by Manu, these people came to be knowns as Manavas (Humans). Manu’s fish is believed to be the Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu, also first avatar among Dasavatars.
