ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Once, in an improbable encounter with an artist, who seemed to me to be Alfredo Volpi, in an imaginary restaurant in a city that could be Montevideo, I heard him say: - A solitary color on a white background moves little, just pulsates, but when other colors come together, occupying the same field, a kind of dance of vibrations and unusual movements begins. As if, in the presence of other colors, each color gains rhythm and dynamism according to the type of chromatic relationships that they establish with the other colors, with the shape and with the space. Such relationships generate rhythms, harmonies, disharmony, consonance and dissonance capable of generating significance and value to a work of art. - Thus, if color is dance, painting is game and composition; compositional game, in which the painter organizes color and shape, in an always new way, in tonal relationships and dynamics that will constitute the daily product of his work. - As for the relationship between music and painting, much has already been said, but one of its modern origins lies in the intellectual and aesthetic exchange that Kandinsky and Schoenberg established when they exceeded the limits of rationality and formalism with their chromatic abstractions and shades. Then Volpi ordered a coffee, paid the bill with a coin, which I didn't recognize, and went out to buy eggs to make his spices. As I looked out the window at the street, which was moving strangely, I thought of colored polygons and large, untouched white walls.
