About The Artwork

The last piece in a trilogy of Scottish landmarks in front of winter skies is part of my 'Scottish Silhouettes' collection. Features like lights and stars in each painting are highlighted with a golden yellow. St Mary's Abbey is a partly ruined monastery located in Melrose, near the Scottish Borders. I was particularly drawn to the shapes in the window that once would have held stained glass having the beauty of a winter sky's pattern as a form of natural stained glass Scotland's natural beauty and rich heritage are always inspiring to me. I wanted to juxtapose silhouettes of people and landmarks against the vivid colours of the winter sky to highlight the beauty of an evening walk in winter.

I am an Ethiopian British writer, poet, human rights activist, performance and multidisciplinary artist whose work tries to make sense of the injustices in the world whilst also celebrating the beauty to be found. I was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and moved to the UK in 2000. My work explores the depths and intersections of issues in society and their impact on everyday life through the lens of feminism, nature, identity, social justice, sexuality and mental health. I use a mixture and sometimes a combination of digital painting, photography and watercolours as tools in my art pieces. I often use vivid bold colours and symbolism to explore what it’s like navigating intersectional spaces.
