About The Artwork

My Precious Bowls and Moonjars series are inspired by the Japanese artform kintsugi - the repair of broken porcelain with gold. By using gold the flaw is given respect and the preciousness of the piece is enhanced. Wabi-sabi, which is the acceptance of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent and incomplete", also reflects the idea - that imperfection, change and fate are all aspects of the human condition. Life experiences, good and bad, make us who we are and working through the difficult times makes us stronger. We fill the cracks with gold. This is a Moonjar, inspired by the traditional Korean white porcelain so named because of its shape and milky color of the glaze said to resemble the coloration of the moon. This elegant vessel appears to glow from within almost as if it is filled with moonlight. Notice too how images materialise and evaporate in the depths of the Moonjar in a semi-abstract way – it's like an unexpected figures come and go as you gaze on the painting. Let your imagination take you where it will. I use ancient art media that have stood the test of time - wax, egg tempera, gold. Beeswax gives colour a beautiful translucence making it seem as if light glows from within the painting. Working with gold leaf is a delicate business needing patience and practice to place that filigree just as I want it. Colour suspended in beeswax, paired with pure gold, makes for an opulent visual experience. The paper support is Fabriano made from 100% cotton fibre (300lb). I deliberately tear the edges to appear as a fragment. I recommend that you frame the painting floating in a white box frame or you can choose to place it behind a mount. My signature is etched into gold in the bottom right of the painting.

I am an Irish artist living in the beautiful coastal town of Wexford on the sunny southeast corner of Ireland. I have a unique and individual approach to art; finding beauty in imperfection, extraordinary in the everyday, complexity in simple things. My creative style is immediate, vibrant and contemporary. Inspiration comes from ordinary things; a simple tea bowl, a flower, a hen, a fish... to create exquisite tea bowls with golden cracks, majestic moon jars with golden seams, exotic fruit, flamboyant hens, cockerels and other creatures. I relish using ancient art media like wax encaustic, egg tempera, gold. Sumptuous color suspended in beeswax, paired with pure gold, makes for an opulent visual experience. Working with gold leaf is such a delicate affair. Sometimes I feel it has a mind of its own as the gentlest breath can cause it to flicker and fly away!
