There is almost always more than what meets the eye. This is one of 2 pieces which I created to hang together in a gallery for a solo exhibit titled More. When viewed together, they convey the idea further yet each is it's own piece and stands alone as well. This one has layers of blue paint on one half of the yin-yang, symbolizing "above ground". There is a line drawing (with paint) of trees within the blue area. These trees continue "below ground" into the other half of the yin-yang, the charcoal drawing area where it expands into another world. This is an excerpt from my artist statement for the show: These work reflect on my connection to trees and their importance in nature and all they represent. Trees find their way around the obstacles they encounter to continue to flourish. They remind me constantly to live. To carry on. They remind us that there is always more than what meets the eye. ...What is beneath the surface is what allows the tree to grow, what gives it strength. As we all live our lives, we, too, carry experiences within below what others can readily see. *Please note that this is a circle shaped piece. Original is on 3/4" maple which I cut myself into a circle. The piece is sealed with uv protectors and comes ready to hang but can be framed if desired.

My current works in the "imaginary landscapes of organic memory" series, are created through a process of direct interaction with each piece as they develop. Each piece starts with a drawing which I see as the bones or structure of the piece and from there a dialogue begins. Through a combination of choices, chances and reactions, layer upon layer builds the landscape. I see the process similar to how we develop through our lives with each layer representing experiences built upon previous ones, all which shape who we become. I call upon shapes and textures which I have experienced from nature, which have become part of my soul and where I find peace and safety from the man-made conflicts of day to day living. These imagined landscapes have a surreal element which challenges the viewer yet are also filled with a comfortable familiarity which connects and welcomes.
