About The Artwork

Land of mountains. Peaks are important to us Austrians. Today they delight and inspire us, they stand for sporting and technological feats and human curiosity. At the same time, the rugged majesty of the massifs leaves us awestruck. In the Middle Ages, the mountain was the insurmountable obstacle to human sophistication. Then, with the Renaissance gaze, distant mountain horizons stood for the infinite as in Leonardo's work, or a lonely, cool cave in the rock for the intimate closed space for a person's psyche. In Titian's work, too, the medieval image of the perilous wilderness of stone turns into an almost lovingly yearning image of pure nature when he brings the blue shadows of the Alpine foothills or irrepressible caprices of light, color, and weather into his sensuous works. Sensual they should be, the nature in Mungenast's paintings. The summit pictures oscillate between figuration and abstraction, shrill layers of color import the alienating, such as the fleshly in the red Matterhorn. Emotionally strong is the abrupt ductus and the abstract space-giving painting. In contrast, Mungenast works with sewn-in areas of color or strictly geometric layers in varnish that have an architectural effect. Opposites expand our intensity of feeling. Many different things are present at the same time. Nature as a valuable retreat for recreation and rest on the one hand, on the other hand its protection remains a hollow slogan. Barbara Mungenast likes to disappoint hasty expectations with rude interventions in smooth aesthetics. The profitable illusion of multitasking: parallel attentions determine our result-oriented lives today.
