About The Artwork

Welcome! Enjoy the authentic and original art by Dutch artist Sylvia Thijssen! Title of the painting: Murdered by Paint Dated: 2017, signed and dated on the front. Size: 100 x 120 cm (± 39,5 x 47 inches) (Nederlandse tekst onder de Engelse tekst) Murdered by Paint. Every night, zapping on the couch, I see dozens of people being killed. They are blown down or explode, necks are flipped with a sharp snap, they are stabbed or ingeniously strangled. And all for the entertainment of us, the people. Give the people bread and circuses, was the motto of the Romans to keep the rabble. This way the ones with power can do what they want to. We, the people, are the slaves of yore. We no longer need to lug but to consume. And if we start to think that all that consuming is not such a good idea, we are intoxicated with the idea that we can also consume 'green'. As an artist, I try, as good and bad as I can, to avoid 'bread and circuses' by giving space to my own feeling and thinking. But I can’t deny that occasionally I feel drown in my strong need to play with paint and imagining. Swimming against the social flow is very tiring, freedom has its price. From that feeling my painting 'Murdered by Paint' was created. Medium: this artwork is created with high quality artist paints (Ara). Painting is varnished to protect against UV, dust and scratches. Art colors your life! I wish for my paintings to make you dream, to inspire your ideas and to give you a lot of colorful days! Sylvia Thijssen http://www.sylviathijssen.nl

In a short docu I show you my latest series of paintings in my studio. In Dutch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPrjF3D0Irs&t=61s Living in a not-too-big city in the south of the Netherlands, the Dutch visual artist Sylvia Thijssen walks every day to her studio. It is a four kilometers walk wherein she crosses two small rivers. It is an excellent distance to free her mind of domestic affairs for to let the muse in. It is in this sunny, personal space that she paints her colorful canvasses, in active gestures big and small, like dancing, always trying to hear the colors sing together, searching for an energy wherein is also the peace of a moment in eternity, taking time as if the paint forms a structure that grew and matured. Thijssen is not thinking of her work as making paintings, no, these are adventures. Exciting adventures for her as a painter to make new experiences for the one who is looking at them. These adventurous paintings are meant to wander the mind and to wonder the eye. See also her website: http://www.sylviathijssen.nl
