About The Artwork
"My Shadow" is a visual meditation on the power of choice, symbolized by the doubling of the shadow under the street lamp. The shadow, traditionally seen as a representation of the unconscious or repressed aspects of the self, becomes a powerful metaphor for the choices that we make in life. Just as the shadow doubles under the lamp, so too do our choices create diverging paths that lead us down different trajectories. the painting invites the viewer to consider the significance of these choices, and the impact they can have on our lives. The doubling of the shadow also speaks to the idea of the self as a multifaceted entity, capable of embodying both light and dark aspects. Inspired by the melancholic beauty of Edward Hopper's urban and rural landscapes, the emotional depth of Anselm Kiefer's works, and Peter Doig's depictions of sentimentality and nostalgia, I aim to create evocative and sometimes dark representations of my subjects through traditional media of oil on canvas.
