EL NACIMIENTO DE VENUS Se inscribe en la sensibilidad propia del Renacimiento, tiempo en que se renovó la representación de los mitos de la Antigüedad Clásica, en los cuales los renacentistas encontraban verdades escondidas sobre la naturaleza humana. Esto significó una verdadera defensa del humanismo antropocéntrico frente al teocentrismo del pasado. Gracias al poder social de la familia Médici, los artistas bajo su protección pudieron trabajar los encargos mitológicos sin que la Iglesia pudiera impedirlo. Se abría así el tiempo de la secularización de la cultura. Una de las figuras mitológicas de mayor importancia fue la de Venus, diosa pagana, deidad que encuentra sus equivalentes en la diosa egipcia Isis o Iemanjá en Umbanda, entre otras. Cuenta el mito que Saturno (Cronos), dios del tiempo, desgarra y lanza los genitales de su padre Caelos (Urano), lo que fertiliza el mar. El roce de la espuma engendra a Venus que, con la ayuda del viento, es transportada hasta las orillas de la isla de Chipre en una concha marina. Allí, es llevada por ‘las Horas’ al lugar de los ‘Inmortales’. Dentro de la iconografía del arte, la concha marina sobre la que Venus se sostiene en el lienzo es un símbolo de la fertilidad femenina. La diosa pagana Venus (o Afrodita, para los griegos) ha sido el símbolo, desde tiempos inmemoriales, de la fertilidad y el erotismo en la mitología grecorromana. Se trata de un personaje caracterizado por el erotismo arrasador sobre y por los otros, y por ser una mujer con voz de mando, firmeza e inteligencia. The friction of the foam engenders Venus which, with the help of the wind, is transported to the shores of the island of Cyprus in a seashell. There, she is taken by ‘the Hours’ to the place of the ‘Immortals’. Within the iconography of art, the seashell on which Venus is held on the canvas is a symbol of female fertility. The pagan goddess Venus (or Aphrodite, for the Greeks) has been the symbol, since time immemorial, of fertility and eroticism in Greco-Roman mythology. She is a character characterized by overwhelming eroticism about and by others, and for being a woman with a voice of command, firmness and intelligence.
