This is a mixed media work produced by recursively combining layers of painted mortar and photographs of those same layers, over which cut out words have been layered to form the verse "Nagging clumps of fiction inhabit me". The work was produced on site using ruin walls of a historic mansion in the Campos Elíseos district of São Paulo, Brazil. The surfaces were captured digitally, leaving the walls untouched. Despite the mansion's historic importance, it was neglected by the authorities and the owners for decades, decaying severely until it finally collapsed in 2019 resulting in the death of one person who happened to work on the adjacent lot. In the end any house, old or new, renovated, restored, or destroyed, can be seen as a metaphor for one's existence: the human body as a building, a temple, a library, a record of stories ranging from the most historically accurate to the wildest imaginative tale. The verse on the artwork can be thought of as a reminding call to acknowledge the stories one is made of. A reminder to make some effort to understand why our own inner stories are being told, even though they are always partially composed of fictional fragments. A call to ensure we never neglect the foundations of this fiction we have chosen to live in, at the risk of existential collapse.

My inspiration comes from observing how contemporary society is in an accelerating process of moving from real life to symbolic representations of life. I make use of mixed elements of communication media as art materials, even as those become increasingly immaterial. In this new reality I do not see many practical distinctions between word, sound, color, and shape. All are equally sanctioned weapons on the contemporary battleground of meaning. I make art out of the elements we now make life with, which is why in my work you may see the news, the ads, the symbols. You may see verses rushing through crowded spaces. You may hear the city as an open opera of homeless words and notice wordless faces. From physical to digital and back. I investigate and report. The vagueness of it all, depicted as faithfully as I can.
