ABOUT THE ARTWORK
The figure's arms are stretched out embracing what the person considers to constitute their identity. The arms surround the self represented by the figure and continue to stretch away from it to embrace the disorder, represented by the antidepressant on the right. The painting problematizes treatment and recovery from mood disorders, specifically depression, primarily the fact that it is not uncommon for long term patients to identify with the disorder thus clouding their judgement and making their want for recovery unabiding.
