Night Painting: Tree and Big Dipper, Cosmic Superimposition Print

This painting was inspired by a tree just outside my door in the woods of rural New Jersey at about 2 AM in winter, at which time the Big Dipper was perfectly superimposed and visible through its bare and towering branches. As a work in Art it repesents the human place in the Cosmos not only because it is filtered through the human sensibility and because it is an expression, a picture of that experience but in the way that experience occurred in synchronicity with the meeting in my eye from one place on Earth, of the stars' constellation (also an expression of human sensibilty, conceptually) in relation to a tree light years away from it (and in a time in which the light perceived originated in another time passed, yet known in the future as it combined with the tree in my eyes). I have been drawing and painting the subject for more than 20 years and it has spawned hundreds of drawings and dozens of paintings. This is the culmination of all of the work from its inception to date approximately 22 years in this specific painting. In the broadest sense it is, I believe, exemplary of the naure of much of the Art and Poetry which has been made across all time and places. It has taken me all of this time and it will in that same way express itself only fully to someone who sees it over and over again over many years.
