About The Artwork

This is an abstract painting on un-primed (raw) canvas in acrylic and Sharpie marker. The painting was wrapped around heavy duty gallery depth (1.5”) stretcher bars after it had dried, such that elements of the composition wrap around the sides of the final piece (see detail images).   The composition of this painting is like a vortex of activity. Dispirit elements are set against each other like a crazy tossed salad of imagination. I'm using pattern and systems of regular mark making to create a sort of scaffold within the composition and hanging wild brushstrokes, automatic doodles, and poured paint smears off of that scaffold in several successive layers. The layering creates a sense of space within the painting, giving the viewer a sort of place to go inside the vortex, inviting the discovery of unexpected connections and the contemplation of other ways the world might work.
