About The Artwork

This piece is a rejection of my past-painting practice, this is my time to experiment. I have spent too long making works that are unfulfilling and time consuming, instead I have come to realise I must separate my multi-faceted visual talents, I used to spend hours proposing dimensional works in Photoshop that took over a month to replicate on canvas, now I am working inside a time frame where I can finish a painting in 24 hours and be more satisfied with the outcome than my old pieces. I still make digital works but they have a new purpose and reside in the virtual realm. This piece is born from a place of stress and dwelling, it has a bacterial quality which emanates in my visual works, a concept of forms shifting, expanding and converging. It represents consciousness of anxiety, sobriety and decadent meta-painting. Why should I spend hours painting gradients inverted into circles, when I can create the abstractions I want to address by adding texture to my favourite tone of pink and painting a globule? It is titled ‘Ode to H’, in honour of my favourite artist Hetty Douglas, whose operation enlightened me to a modern intellectualisation of the domination of painting as a product, a therapy and a shrine.

My painting work derives from a fascination with metropolitan living colliding with ‘hedonistic’ desires, influenced by decadence and escapism, propelling my interest into nightlife activities, immersed by electronic music, leading to developing expressionism in block colour with expanding motifs, intertwining a profound interest in typography and discourse, into how they yield meaning in social contexts.
