About The Artwork

Having grown up with an artist mother and a successful business man as a father, Frank Nichols has always felt a sentiment of undeserved privilege. This translated into a continuous urge to live for something more meaningful and fight the conventional life of superficial wants and the constant need to 'grow up', which was often at odds with the values held by those that surrounded the artist. This sense of contradiction is reflected in Nichols' art either as a form of playful mockery or through moments that characterize frustration and deep sadness, however, simple child-like characters can also be discerned since the artist considers those to be the most innocent and truthful times. The artist strong dislike for attention and profit is the primary reason for Nichols' art never to have been shown, until recently when a close friend asked the artist whether the works could be displayed, finally convincing the artist on the premise that they may evoke a similar sentiment in a stranger and thus lead to a sense of interconnectedness. As a child, the artist had attended numerous exhibitions around the world (Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, Spain, New York, etc) and appreciated the beauty of classic Renaissance and impressionist artists (in particular David, Ingres, Da Vinci, Renoir, Monet, Van Gogh and Degas). As a writer and philosopher, the subjects the artist wrote and read about increasingly coincided with the themes expressed by the abstract expressionist movement (American with Willem De Kooning, Frank Stella, Robert Motherwell - and European in particular works by the Die Brücke artists), as well as the pop art movement (mainly Roy Lichtenstein). Moments of chaos and mockery are complemented by a search for peace and order, thus Nichols' attraction to geometrical shapes (influenced through works by Picasso and the Bauhaus artists) which can be seen in the earlier drawings and at times incorporated into the canvases. The paintings mainly feature acrylic on canvas, but most often also include ink, graphite, charcoal and gouache. Nichols' favourite artists include Jacques Louis David, August Rodin, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Egon Schiele.
