Phillip Stephens was born in 1965 in Sheffield, Yorkshire. "Having always been surrounded with books on the arts and sciences, I was inspired by my curiosity in the natural world to a deeper study of Physics. This was tempered by my abiding interest in Art and the humanities, and my understanding of the philosophical nature of theoretical physics. This eventually led to my combining a Physics degree with a degree in Philosophy, which I completed at Nottingham University. However, throughout this period my interest in the Arts became dominant. During this time, I came to believe that the most philosophically all-encompassing method for the exploration of the human condition and our relationship with the complex notion and nature of reality is via aesthetic means. Since finishing my degree, I have been continuously painting, using traditional methods with oil on canvas and I have continued to develop and refine my approach. The resultant images are, consequently, not only meant to be visually arresting, but an attempt to be self contained poetic and philosophic statements."
