About The Artwork

I grew up in a Parisian, French family where Pierrot was found in almost every room in the house. Pierrot is a character of pantomime and Commedia dell'Arte whose origins are in the late seventeenth-century Italian troupe of players performing in Paris and known as the Comédie-Italienne; the name is a hypocorism of Pierre (Peter), via the suffix -ot. His character in contemporary popular culture—in poetry, fiction, the visual arts, as well as works for the stage, screen, and concert hall—is that of the sad clown, pining for love of Columbine, who usually breaks his heart and leaves him for Harlequin. The intention of this painting was to capture Pierrot's innocence and melancholy.

I am a Canadian based artist that specializes in cold wax, oil and encaustic medium. Born and raised in both the Pacific Northwest and France, I am widely influenced by my natural surroundings, cultural traditions and the representational artists that have defined art history. My process is rooted in material, colour and organic shapes and is highly responsive to the process and medium at play. My paintings often portray a sense of femininity visually experienced through colour, rhythm and organic shapes found throughout various natural and architectural landscapes. Through my work, I hope to walk the viewer through the development of self. Starting from organic shapes and translucent layers to represent the intrinsic quality of nature to defined brushstrokes, line work and cultural thematic colours that define the expression of self.
