The old-fashioned carnation name 'pinks' comes from the serrated flower edges, which look as if cut with pinking shears. Carnations were often the colour pink, which is how the colour came to be referred to as pink. Carnations have many meanings, but pink carnations specifically have traditionally been symbols of a women or mothers love.
