Some of our soup spoons had become a little tarnished and acquired an almost golden quality; looking at them on the table, the reflected spaces contained within the bowls of the spoons multiplied the ceiling lights and opened up and concaved the ceiling space above, creating something akin to stars on a planetarium ceiling. A spoon in a place setting on a table can contain a very different place and energy within it. I have long been fascinated by the painting of armour in Baroque works and saw Caravaggio’s wonderful “The Taking of Christ” when on loan from the National Gallery of Ireland to the National in London some time back. Within the already dark, charged space of the painting he created, in the armour of the arresting soldier, another, even darker space, with a white flash of light that extends directly to Christ’s neck. In “Place” the aerial view of the spoons sees the picture plane divided into three, which creates a spatial ambiguity through its allusion to landscape and, with imagination, repositions the spoons as vessels. The cropped handles suggest a continuance/flow out of the picture or perhaps incoming conduits of energy.

I work in the still life painting tradition from brief, often precarious, arrangements of small, neutral or insignificant subject matter. I use observation, intuition, relationship, scale and metaphor to create a sense of clarity and space and give form to my sensibility. I regard form as concentrated space, process and phenomena and strive to create visual meditations that are layered, poetic and stop time. I draw on my interests outside art for inspiration - mainly music, yoga, meditation and Eastern thought, mainly Tao and Zen. I am particularly drawn to the increasing connections between Buddhist related thought and aspects of contemporary science, particularly physics and neuropsychology. I have also been very influenced by Iain McGilchrist's groundbreaking book "The Master and his Emissary", a Rosetta stone that connects and explains the two brain hemispheres, "the two cultures" and the philosophies of East and West. It reveals much of arts response to 20th/21st century Western society to be in fact, like its subject, Cartesian and dualistic. Please look at my blog for more written thoughts and observations.
