About The Artwork

mixed media ( enamel-resin- ethanol- petroleum distillates ) on photographic paper Serkan Altinoz is a Brooklyn based contemporary abstract artist with roots in an ancient art form. Born in Istanbul he was raised in Izmir, Turkey. He began training in the traditional art of paper marbling at an early age under the tutelage of his father Sedat Altinoz, a 5th generation artist at the Mustafa Duzgunman School in Izmir. Serkan, who has a degree in Labour Economics and Industrial Relations from Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, has developed his oeuvre outside the conventional art school environment and his work continues to be informed by nature, music and the infinite possibilities of “painting” on water. Since arriving in New York in 2013 he has been shown in numerous exhibitions and in galleries including: Galerie Protégé, (Chelsea), Jeffrey Leder Gallery (LIC), Trestle Projects (Gowanus) and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. His time in The States has seen rapid developments and progress in his art making process. His original, more traditional paper marbling was produced exclusively with organic ground pigments but more recently he has been experimenting with a wider variety of materials. His work now explores the possibilities of acrylic and enamel paints and resin. He no longer limits himself to works on paper, but has moved from canvas and wood, to light boxes and three-dimensional objects. He is an artist committed to pushing the boundaries of his unique, distinctive art form.

Serkan Altinoz was born in Istanbul and raised in Izmir Turkey in 1985. He began training as a paper marbler at an early age under the tutelage of his father Sedat Altinoz, a 5th generation artist at the Mustafa Duzgunman School in Turkey. Altinoz joined many group exhibition in his early age in Turkey . Also he graduated from 9 eylul University Labour Economics and Industrial Relation in 2011. His fresh approach to the art form stems from his personal spirit and insight. His work evokes cellular and organic forms and structures that easily find a place within contemporary trends in fiber and paper works and installations. Altinoz has been developing his oeuvre outside the conventional art school environment and his devotion to the natural world and skill as a musician strongly inform his aesthetic. Organic is a word that cannot be overused when speaking of his techniques and results. He is an artist firmly committed to a fantastically lush palette of hand-crushed pigments that are derived from natural materials. His lyrical compositions carry the viewer’s eye along currents that describe the fluid watery base on which they are created. Altinoz moved to New York in the winter of 2013 under the student visa. He rapidly integrated himself into the local art scene and has exhibited in numerous group shows including Jeffrey Leder Gallery (Queens) , Galerie Protégé ( Chealsea ) , Trestle Project as well as having been invited to show at Vermont College of Fine Arts. Serkan Altinoz is an artistic voice capable of fusing traditional craft and contemporary art. In doing so , he creates harmonious, nature based works that speak to twenty-first century sophisticated urbanite. We live in a culture in which our engagement with and effect on the natural environment have become inescapabale. Ideally this kind of conversation, as with any worthwhile conversation spurred by art, will be befical to al of us who engage with it.
