A breezy summer afternoon watching the young sailors in their Opti boats racing around Pleasant Bay, Cape Cod was the initial inspiration for the piece. I have spent over 40 years going to Cape Cod and always seem to find treasures of inspiration no matter the location or the weather. This piece is No.3 in the Day at the Beach Series. I want the viewer to see the piece and feel the sunshine and the shore breeze on a summer day. The colors, stroke work and texture all lend themselves to creating this feeling. I hope to translate a memory of that summer day onto the paper. I have been working with mixed media on paper for about 24 months. However, I have been painting with watercolors and acrylics for 35 years. This medium and material has freed up my style and loosened my approach enabling bold foundational stroke work that acts as the foundation of my mixed media pieces. In all of the mixed media pieces I want the paper to have a presence in the piece and the negative space have a shape. These ideas help to anchor my technique and allow the work to be viewed independently or narrate towards each other in the various series collections. Here, "Pleasant Bay, Cape Cod" the clear skies and bright waters are accentuated by the aqua, turquoise and of course sage and kelly green.

Influences include Impressionistic masters such as Monet, Bonnard, Picasso, and Van Gogh. I call upon vibrant color brushwork and light to translate places, animals, and abstract ideas onto canvas and paper. Creating two distinct planes of light and color, I use light leaks, shape, color, saturation and shape to expose wonder. I work with acrylic washes, inks, pencils, gel mediums, and glosses to create texture and movement. In addition to representational work, I create semi abstract paintings that revolve around a central color. Aiming for a meditative, calm abstract style that is simultaneously timeless and modern.
