About The Artwork

Fish-like figures with multiple breasts gaze at the viewer from a subaquatic world. These creatures, with their huge glossily botoxed pouting lips and multi-coloured eyes, float above a single shell. Two small bubbles float from the shell, which just reveals a tendon of flesh. These fantastical anthropomorphic invertebrates are like escapees from Bosch’s The garden of earthly delights, and each looks at the viewer with a variety of expressions, perhaps reminding us of our conflicted relationship with the animal world. The mixture of naturalistic and cartoonish is meant to convey our unsteady understanding of our condition. "Some of his paintings are so imaginative that you sometimes feel that you are flicking through a Dr Seuss book, but Pointing’s pieces are not aimed at young viewers. Have a closer look at ‘Plenty of Fish’, 2018. Here there is such a clever and witty play around the title and the female organs of the fish." Art critic Tammy Woodrow 7/08/2023
