About The Artwork

The first thing I read in The Midnight Library was a quote by Sylvia Plath: "I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life." The author, Matt Haig, took the story of surviving self harm into a mystical experience in the library at midnight where he wound the thread of pain through philosophy, quantum physics and psychology, each time offering a choice, a possibility of a solution and a better life. As I read, I began painting what became Possibilities. This painting is the expression of the acknowledgement of self and learning to believe that there are endless possibilities waiting for us not only to acknowledge but to consider as choices that will enhance our lives. Possibilities was begun by applying many layers of acrylic using brushes, palette knives and a sponge. Smears of different colors came next and became expressions of a woman surrounded by notes - to self, about history, poetry, philosophy, science and math. These were created by the combination of brushes and palette knives. On a simulated scrap of paper (lower right) is the latter part of Path's quote which I penciled into partially dried paint. Using an incomplete scenario, Possibilities offers the thought that there is always more to develop, more to hope for in our lives. But it also means we have to "see" what we are looking at.
