About The Artwork

This painting is one in a series of paintings I have been painting recently based on Native American mythology. In the Native American Hopi tradition, Katchinas are supernatural beings connected to and expressing the wisdom of nature's forces. Eagle represents strength, power, and is the messenger to the heavens. Eagle has a very sharp eyesight, can see far with great clarity, and has an large overview of the landscape below. Eagle is a reminder of being connected to a larger world than just the mundane everyday life. The dance invokes that connection so that we can remember we are matter imbued with spirit. I used gold leaf on the drum and silver leaf for the background which was mainly painted over except for some areas and to give a subtle iridescent quality to the sky. The painting is stretched on a museum wrapped canvas with the sides painted manganese blue, a hue of blue that is present in the sky of the painting in lighter tones. Ready to hang, hanging wire attached. Not framed.

Zsuzsanna Rossetter was born and raised in Hungary and moved to the United States in 1997. Art has accompanied her all her life and she started to draw at a very early age. Zsuzsa watched her father draw figures and carve wood sculptures, and was especially fascinated by the African face painted in black hanging on the wall of their home that he had made from a half-split log. She grew up in a house with a large garden where everything seemed magical to her: the ferns, fruit trees, and the flowers in springtime. Zsuzsa’s grandparents had a large farm where she would climb on the cherry trees with her cousins. All this created a deep affinity in her toward the natural world and the living things in it.
