Railroad Tracks with Cumulus Clouds Print

This original oil painting was created en plein air in the summer of 2018. This railroad track is very near my house and it's a great place to paint - it's convenient - but it's also inspiring and very American in a Hopper-esque way. We get trains only twice a day at predictable times, so it's easy to set up my easel on the tracks and plug in my ear phones with out worrying. I create paintings to last for generations. This piece was painted on a cradled wooden panel which I used traditional homemade rabbit glue to mount linen canvas on, which I then covered with homemade gesso. It's a rigid surface and a method that has been used for hundreds of years. The frame was custom made by fine furniture maker Jens Sehm, which I hand gilded. The gilding has some charming imperfections. It was covered with shellac and should age nicely. It should darken a bit and get better with time. The painting measures 16" x 20" and about 17.5" x 21.5" when framed.
