Robert Lee’s paintings involved manipulating and rotating a two-dimensional plane to form different geometries. Starting with an imaginary plane, Lee re-envisioned both the form and orientation. He stretched, torqued, expanded, and squeezed the two-dimensional plane until a three-dimensional form develops. Integral calculus acted as a catalyst in his thought process as he developed his concept for his Re-Created Paintings. Next, using a computer program, Lee metamorphosed the photographs of his past paintings as a source material. This produced a transformed, visual image of a polygon, which Lee transcribed on paper. Using this image, he found the longest possible length (A) of recycled wood that he wanted to use in a new painting. Using the corresponding length of the polygon drawing (a) with a second length from the drawing (b), he set up a mathematical proportion in order to find the unknown length of the recycled wood (B). Throughout the process, Lee contemplated two passages. The first was “For we know that the whole creation groans and labors with birth pangs together until now”. Lee’s past abstract expressionist images have made a commentary on this verse. The second states, “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth;/ And the former shall not be remembered or come to mind’”. This quotation became the cornerstone and inspiration for this current body of work, as he endeavored to re-create his own art. These new paintings interact with the negative space of the wall forming a new, unified composition, resulting in holistic images.

If you would like to commission a painting, contact Robert S. Lee at . It was at an early age that Robert Lee developed a love for art. As a child he found one of his father's books on drawing and he knew what he wanted to do with his life. It was at this point that he started drawing. However his focus changed as he prepared for academia at the University of California at San Diego. He put aside his art for a more promising future in math and science. Things came to a head at the end of his junior year when he abruptly changed his major to Visual Arts. After graduating Lee floated around doing various jobs that were totally unrelated to art. Later he decided to take architecture classes and then move on to graduate school at California State University, Los Angeles where he received an MFA in Fine Art with a focus on painting and drawing. When given the opportunity he teaches art as a professor. Lee has won several awards in painting both locally as well as abroad. He is constantly thinking of questions and tackling difficult issues in contemporary art and design. He regularly meets with professional artists to talk about creative practices and sources of inspiration. He has exhibited around the world, including Canada, France, South Korea, and the United States. Artist Statement: I re-create what I see and paint artwork with a humane concern that connects Art with humanity. I begin to paint in slashing fast brushstrokes and pallet knife techniques using dark heavy colors to bright, clear, dazzling colors. It is the feelings and the colors that provide the essence of my images. I strive to create paintings with vibrant colors, intense marks, brushwork, line, composition, emotions, and energy. My paintings absorb light which interacts with the pigments and then caroms off the canvas displaying the feelings invested in the artworks. The colors, direction, and angles of paint work to create the expressive content.
