Remembering a hot summer evening Print

My childhood memories are no different than any other middle class kid from South Asia. But after so many years, these memories are fading. When I try to recall such moments, the detail disappears. The visual variations are getting simpler by each passing moment. I want to preserve these before everything is gone. So here, a very detailed courtyard scene transforms into a simple pattern, a window screen or ‘jaali’. I hope some of the viewers will experience the similar emotions viewing this work. I paint on metal leaves pasted on plywood, use patina chemicals and thinly diluted oil paints, and treat that solution like water color, layer upon layer, deliberately creating visual textures on the surface. Most of the time, I had no control over textures and all sort of accidents happen (just like our lives). After each layer, I apply varnish and sand the surface, this process give me an impression that every step helping me capturing a small amount of light and the painting will illuminate without any additional back-lighting (to me, sounds very poetic ). After completing each painting, I feel that I have preserved a small fraction of my life.
