What a wonderful piece to work on! It represents one of the ways people celebrate Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead - a joyous Mexican celebration of remembrance dedicated to family and friends who have passed on. Families spend time in cemeteries cleaning, decorating, and partying with food and music to honor the spirits of loved ones. They stay late into the night and create a magical feeling with lit candles everywhere. The brightly colored papers used for my origami clothing capture some of the festive feeling of this personal holiday celebration. Bright colors are also used for the flower pots and lanterns surrounding the figures. I especially enjoyed creating the hats for these spirits, embellishing with crystals, jewels, and mini pom-poms. The biggest challenge was to add working mini-lights to the piece to help capture the festive feeling. Installing small LED lights inside the origami lanterns provided some of this effect. I also used tiny dollhouse lights to fashion candles in front of several of the specially designed headstones. To increase the lighting reflection I installed silver metallic paper under the background papers and around the inside perimeter of the frame. The background papers have hundreds of tiny cut-outs that reveal bits of silver paper to create a twinkling feel of the lights. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.

United States
Born on the West coast of the US and raised in upstate New York State I now live in the American Southwest in Tucson, AZ. Making art was my first love as a child, and art continues to impact my life every day. Although I grew up in a small town I had a lot of artistic influence from my family; my father loved art & played musical instruments, one of his brothers was a professional artist, my mother always encouraged making hand-made gifts and cards, and two of my five sisters are also artists.
