ABOUT THE ARTWORK
"Rides a pale horse" is one of a series of pictures that are about dealing with ones helplessness in the face of the death and struggling with the loss of balance that accompanies grief. As well as using a personal iconography and symbolism to explore the themes in my work, I often incorporate archetypes from mythology to stir memory and feeling. After losing my sight I need the physicality of the contact of the pen nib with the paper to provide me with an anchor point from which I can more accurately gauge movement and pressure of my mark making. The picture will be shipped rolled, securely inside a sturdy shipping tube.

Laurence Porter is an Irish artist living in France. Laurence lost his sight at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. The situation was such that only in the following year were surgeons able to restore sufficient sight in one eye for him to resume working. He has since been learning to adapt his working practice to his new circumstances. “My work explores themes of love and loss, of balance and the struggle to maintain them--and to regain them once they’ve been lost. Drawing inspiration from 16th-century Mannerist and Baroque artists, I feel my work loosely falls under the umbrella of Contemporary Baroque."
