Riding My Hood Print

In this painting, a young woman with a red cape is perched on top of the word 'little'. Her cape is done up high and only her eyes are revealed. She wears a dead wolf wrapped around her neck. I'm sure you've heard about that famous little girl with the red cape? You know the one, she heads into the forest on her own, only to be mislead by a nasty wolf? Indeed, it's Little Red Riding Hood. Well, she inspired me to make this painting - though my aim was, of course, to put a different spin on the story. As I was thinking about her life in the 1600's (which is when the original story was written) I came to the conclusion that she probably knew how to make her way through a forest. Actually, she probably walked through the forest all the time. She probably knew how to wield a knife. And, more importantly, she could probably tell the difference between a goat and a wolf. I know it's a fairy tale, not a documentary, but her naivety is so exasperating that I wanted to see what would happen if the tables were turned. 'My' Red Riding Hood is a mysterious and self-possessed young woman, a little gung-ho perhaps. Let's just say she's not someone you'd want to piss off on a rainy day, which is probably where the wolf went wrong. Oh, he tried alright, but Red Riding Hood flung her basket to one side, reached over her shoulder and whipped out her shotgun (clever ladies come prepared) in 10 seconds flat. Had it been 2015, she would have instagrammed her yield. But it wasn't, so I painted it for her. 'Riding My Hood' is part of a larger series of work based on the representation of women in classic stories and fairy tales, which I created for an exhibition in Ireland (the Kilkenny Arts Festival, KAF). In 2013, it was exhibited at KAF. In 2014 'Riding My Hood' was nominated for the Eberhard-Dietzsch Award and exhibited in Gera, Germany, throughout the Summer. I work with high quality oil paints to ensure longevity and vibrancy of color. For this piece I used Winsor & Newton oil paints thinned with clarified linseed oil. The painting has been coated with a final varnish which protects it from external effects, aging and yellowing. It has been signed and dated on the back.
