Salvador Dalí once lamented, “So little of what could happen does happen.” He continued: How wonderful it would be if, when he ordered lobster in a restaurant, he would instead be served a flaming telephone book. I agree with him wholeheartedly. This watercolor began as a straightforward painting of a canoe and some lily pads. Then I wondered, why can’t lily pads float above the surface of the water as well as on it? Why, no reason at all. This image is also available as an archival (archival inks and paper) digital print.

The images in my paintings come from two worlds: Daylight—the life we experience when we are awake, and Nightlight—the lives we live when we are asleep. What I try to paint cannot be seen, so distinguishing between the two worlds is a matter of only minor importance.
