About The Artwork

This painting was made after seeing satellite images from Grasberg Mine in Indonesia where one billion tonnes of tailings have been released into the river, polluting the fragile ecosystem and ruining land and livelihoods for people downstream. Through the corruption of the paradisiacal blue and turquoise with the colour grey, I reference the negative environmental effects of human activity on the planet. The grey paint acts as the pollutant of the paradise, moving across the surface leaving traces where it has been. This process is conceptually important to the work as it mimics the polluting tailings and runoff from mines, which leach into the pristine natural environment.
