Most often, the chalice symbol is mentioned in connection with the parable of the Holy Grail. According to the Gospel, the Grail is the Passover cup from which Christ drank at the Last Supper and into which Joseph of Aramathea gathered his blood after the crucifixion. The symbolism of the cup in Christianity is associated with the sufferings of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and goes back to the words of the Son of God himself: “O My Father, if this cup may not pass away from Me, unless I drink it, Thy will be done." The bowl is used in still life as a compositional center. On the sides, on an embroidered napkin, we see two roosters and one more sitting on a yoke. These three roosters refer us to Saint Peter. Before the soldiers seized Jesus, he predicted that the Apostle Peter would have time to deny him three times before the rooster announced the beginning of a new day. Indeed, when the high priest interrogated him, Peter was waiting in the courtyard. The maid asked him if he was with the Galilean, to which the apostle replied that he did not know such a person. When Peter was leaving the gate, the second woman said that she saw him with Nazarene. Then he again disowned the teacher. And the third time Peter swore that he did not know the Savior, when people approached him and began to convict him of acquaintance with Jesus. The cock crowed, and Peter remembered the words spoken by the teacher, realized that he had really betrayed three times, and cried in despair. The rooster symbolizes the betrayal of Peter, as well as the remorse that the apostle experienced. Since Peter later became the head of the church, the rooster is also considered a symbol of piety and vigilance that Christians need to show. The entire still life is permeated with Christian symbols: bread and wine, fish and salt, a lamp and a candle. The subject plan is complex in symbolism and beautiful in terms of color.
