About The Artwork

This painting combines multiple styles to create contrast and depth with overlapping layers and strong colour. The base layer is acrylic paint scraped colours of marine, red, pink and cyan. The top of the painting then displays the 'battle of Zama' from the 2nd Punic war. This is painted in monotone to offset the colours underneath. Over the battle scene is pained the third layer which is a 'lion's mouth'. The lion's mouth is the 'power' set over the earth which is destructive. The lower part of the painting features a stencil with gold spray paint of 'Cornonovirus' from the Asterix novel, chariot race. This character featured in the 2017 publication and was 'Rome's champion charioteer who wore a golden helmet with a laughing visage. Over these are painted the 'trademark' horse heads, whichh are being impaled with arrows, swords and spears. Finally reimagined logos of Astra Zeneca and Pfizer are placed upon the horse heads.

Jonathan's art commonly employs multi layered imagery within the composition. The artist uses text, often drawn onto and defacing the depicted image. Imaginative play is a significant component of the work, he was influenced by Picasso's technique of "unlearning", emulating childlike drawings. The theme is typically characterized by this sense of unlearning and rejecting the coercion and conformity within popular culture.
