About The Artwork

This is a one-of-a-kind original painting of one of my favorite places in my home state of Arizona, Saguaro Lake. I kayak here often and love the different views of the saguaro cacti on the banks framed by the mountains beyond. This painting is based on those views and uses abstract, organic shapes to describe the land, water, mountains, and sky. I layered the one-line drawing of the saguaro on top in white acrylic — the continuous line represents the ongoing spirit of the saguaro in spite of the harsh, inhospitable client of the Sonoran desert. I hope this painting gives viewers a sense of the magic, mystery and energy that has always drawn me to the desert landscape, and the treason that I've chosen this as the subject for my artwork.

As an Arizona native, I’ve always had a love for the landscape here. The Sonoran desert strikes a balance between movement and stillness, noise and silence, mystery and reality. The continuity of life in the desert has always amazed me. I represent this balance and continuity in my work using line, color and shape. I use a continuous line in some of my pieces to convey the ongoing spirit of life in the harsh desert climate. The colors I use range from subtle earth tones to vibrant, saturated fields of color. And I use abstracted shapes to represent Earth, Sky, Water, Sun and Moon. The rhythm and harmony of the desert, and the perseverance of life in its extreme environment are the primary inspirations behind my work, and I strive to give a sense of the vitality and magic of the desert southwest in every piece I create.
