About The Artwork
Painting portraits of artists is an opportunity for me to integrate the subtleties of their work, which is something I love doing. In painting Beckett’s portrait, I aimed to bring together the atypical morphology of this writer—whose head is akin to a wild bird—alongside the existential angst we read in his texts. His skeletal head dissolves vertically, as if sculpted into a fine line by the gravitational force of vertigo. The light falls on his bony cheeks and illuminates his eyes with terrifying lucidity. Beckett’s face seems to be made of antimatter—a type of composition made of an inescapable void, a nothingness that condenses and expands yet never sets us free.

Born in 1982 in Laval, Quebec (Canada), Mathieu Laca's work is professionally exhibited for the first time at the age of 17 at the Maison des Arts de Laval. In 2002, he is awarded the City of Laval Culture Prize and is selected by painter Marc Seguin to showcase his work in the group exhibition, Generation Montreal, featuring some of the most talented young artists from Montreal. In 2005, he graduates from Concordia University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. By 2010, Laca is featured in a number of solo exhibitions, including Quebec City's L'espace contemporain. His work is held in public and private art collections across Canada, the United States, China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Norway, Spain, Germany and Israel. Laca lives and works in Laval, Quebec.
